You smart phone can save your life …. Literally

From car accidents to weather related incidents the more you look around you the more you realise that at any moment you could find yourself in a very difficult if not life threatening situation. And this is where a little preparation and a good charge on your Smartphone can make all the difference. Your Smartphone can become your best survival tool .There are several very good survival apps and information apps available that cover everything from first aid, what to do in an emergency, alert you to events in your area and a whole host of how to reading information for every level of interest. Information is the key to surviving just about anything. Panic is the biggest problem when you are in an emergency situation. Having the knowledge to make the right decision will make sure you keep calm and do the right thing to come out of a dangerous situation.

Everyone has their own comfort level and experience level so there is no one perfect solution to fit all needs. Look at the choices and review your own knowledge to come up with a set of information and apps that will work best for you. Also just downloading them and leaving them there for when you might need them is not enough. Go through the app or the information provided and check that you have any items they suggest and that you review and medical procedures you feel you might need. In the middle of a power outage with young children around you is not the time to learn how to do CPR.

Finally please apply common sense. If you know that you are responsible for small children or a person afflicted with a medical condition no app or book will ever be enough. Hands on training is always the best so taking a Red Cross safety class or a certified course in survival training will always trump a Smartphone.

Below are a series of links to apps and products that you can load up and use. This is just a small sampling of the many apps and information e-books on the subject. Find one that works for you and use it. You will never know when you might need it.

I wish for everyone that no one ever needs to use them but unfortunately it’s not a perfect world so be prepared and be safe.

Protecting your privacy on mobile devices

With the new payment technology and other electronic wallets coming closer to reality now would be a good time to review how well you are keeping your private information private. Smartphone’s are creating a whole new way for digital thief’s to obtain allot of information about you. With credit card , banking, social and other critical information being stored on your mobile phone it does not take much to realise how vulnerable you are to having this information pass into the hands of a stranger.

Regardless the type of smart phone or its operating system all units have tools to help you secure your device against data theft.

Short list of steps you can take to ensure that you are protecting yourself.

1- Install an antivirus or malware software. There are plenty of good free ones out there. Considering there is an increase of over 400% from infections in the past year this is a must.
2- Download your apps from trusted sources. Apps are the leading cause of infection because they have the most access to your phone. Always obtain your app from an official app stores such as Apple App store or Google Play.
3- Confirm that you have backups of your data. You can never know when you lose that phone and those precious videos, documents and everything else you carry.
4- Make sure you have GPS tracking and remote wipe services installed and functional. If at the very least you cannot get your phone back you can make sure no one else can get your data.
5- One very common way to get your information is you. No bank, financial institution or legitimate businesses ever require you to give them your password through an email or send you an email asking you to change it. Before you take any action of this nature call the company or institution to confirm they sent it. IF you are not sure then DON’T.

This is a very short series of steps to make you aware that there are things you need to do to protect yourself. Take a minute and browse mobile security online and find out more about what you can do to keep yourself safe.

Who will win the mobile payment war?

Some of us still remember the video wars of the late 1970s and 1980s when video cassette recorders became available in either Sony’s Betamax format or JVC’s VHS format. While Sony’s Beta was higher quality, JVC allowed other consumer electronic companies to license the technology, thereby ensuring widespread availability. Beta sales dwindled while VHS emerged as the winner… Read more
